Defending Hope in Gaza – Photography Exhibition

Defending Hope in Gaza is an exhibition of beautiful yet disturbing images documenting the impact of Operation Cast Lead on the people of Gaza. The exhibition shows how the people of Gaza are bravely struggling to survive, while the work of human rights defenders is severely restricted by limitations on freedom of movement. The Exhibition opens on Monday 11 January and will run until 22 January.

Human Rights organisation Front Line Defenders present a poignant exhibition of harrowing scenes from Israel’s violent Operation Cast Lead which took place one year ago, a 23-day offensive resulting in over 1400 Palestinian deaths in the Gaza Strip. None of the images presented at this exhibition are available to view online: rather, exclusive prints at show.

The venue for this exhibition is Filmbase

…a not-for-profit resource centre for filmmakers. Our building on Curved Street, in the heart of Dublin’s Temple Bar, is a public space where filmmakers can network, hire filmmaking equipment, take training courses and receive support and information about working within the Irish film industry. Filmbase also publishes the cultural magazine Film Ireland and administers a number of film and documentary production award schemes.

Interesting to question target audience for exhibition, in terms of stylishly composed but blunt photographic medium presented and likely target audience/users of facility: 1) those interested in Filmbase and its regular exhibitions, 2) visitors to Temple Bar: passers-by, tourists (exhibition clearly visible from outside, not neccessary to enter building to view) and stream of people to other nearby venues; Meeting House Square adjacent, Button Factory (Music Centre) opposite, Irish Film Institute round the corner.

White Paper Wordle

Front Cover, White Paper on Irish Aid (2006)

The White Paper on Irish Aid was released in 2006, detailing Ireland’s aspirations towards meeting targets laid out the UN’s Millennium Goals.

First and foremost, we give aid because it is right that we help those in greatest need. We are bound together by more than globalisation. We are bound together by a shared humanity. The fate of others
is a matter of concern to us. From this shared humanity comes a responsibility to those in great need beyond the borders of our own state. For some, political and strategic motives may influence decisions on the allocation of development assistance. That is not the case for Ireland. For Ireland, the provision of assistance and our cooperation with developing countries is a reflection of our responsibility to others and of our vision of a fair global society.
